Incarnate Word Summer Bridge Academy 2006

Mission:

The mission of Incarnate Summer Bridge Program is to provide an academic bridge to allow access to those who have been left behind to an opportunity to gain: cultural enrichment, Christian education and character building through an educational program designed to meet the participants’ individual needs and interests.

Program Objectives
Our summer program meets the following critical needs.

  • Provide educational enhancement for students through intensive math and English program
  • Provide Christian education through regular instruction in the Scriptures, plays, movies, worship
  • Cultural Development through our art, dance, music, literature and field trips.
  • Nutrition for student during the summer in conjunction with City of Atlanta Summer Food Program.

Opportunity for Volunteers: Program also provides opportunities for the young adults to participate as volunteers and/or staff. It is intended that the program will help to enhance the Christian education within our congregation and develop the leadership skills of youths in our congregations.

Program Schedule
The program will last for 6 weeks from middle June 3, to July 13 2007
The program will be from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm Monday through Friday.

Admission Requirements: Age 5 – 14.

Permanent Teaching and Administrative Staff Information

Johnetta S.Gillies works at The Department of Defense Education Activity as a Literacy Coach, Vilseck American Elementary School, Vilseck, Germany. She holds a BS in Elementary Education from Columbus State University, a MED in Early Childhood Education from Columbus State University. Mrs. Gillies also has additional course work primarily in reading from Boston State University, University of Maryland, and San Diego State University. She is in charge of the early childhood education program at the Academy.

Cynthia Bland received her Bachelor of Science degree, in English with distinction, in June of 1971 from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. She taught in the Chicago, IL school system for ten years and in Dekalb, Georgia. She has been a probation officer for Cook County, IL and is founder and CEO, Curriculum Specialist, and teacher for Clear English, Inc. a company formed with the intent of enhancing the educational pursuits of low-income residents of Georgia. She is enrolled in a Master's program in Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Phoenix and is expect to graduate April 24, 2006. She is a member of Peace Lutheran Church and is on the Ministry Administration Committee where she is a trustee responsible for Outreach and Evangelism. Mrs. Bland is responsible for elementary and middle school education.

Dr. Wilton Heyliger earned his undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering at Howard University, his MBA from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville and his MA and PhD in economics from Indiana University in Bloomington. He was on the finance faculties Howard University, the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia and East Tennessee State University. He was Head of the Department of Finance and Marketing at Norfolk State University in Virginia and Chair of the Department of Business Administration at Morris Brown College in Atlanta. Dr. Heyliger also served as Director of Special Project and Economic Development in the Office of the President at Morris Brown College. Dr. Heyliger academic research in banking is published in the Review of Black Political Economy, the Review of Business and Economics and The Journal of Small Business Finance. Dr. Heyliger is responsible for character building and Christian education.

Funding:
The Program was provided free of charge to the children with funds supplied by grants from The Florida /Georgia District of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, The Board of Black Ministries Services LCMS, Rivercliff Lutheran Church and Thrivent for Lutherans. In, addition, the program was aided by generous donations from members of the Incarnate Word, St. Mark and Timothy Lutheran congregations and friends of Pastor Heyliger. Many of the parents could not afford to pay for this program which is needed in the community. In order to offer this program in 2007 at a minimal cost we solicit your donation.
